Dear Parents/Guardian,

As a Grade Two student your son/daughter will have the chance to receive the Sacraments of First Confession and First Communion this year. I want to take this opportunity to explain how they will be prepared for these sacraments.

Information sessions will be held at Our Lady of Scapular Parish Hall.

• Tuesday, January 10, at 6:30 PM

• Wednesday January 11, at 6:30 PM

• Thursday, January 12, at 6:30 PM

Information sessions will explain this process in detail. Attendance by one parent/guardian is required. Under exceptional circumstances, a session may be offered to a Candidate and one parent/guardian unable to attend an Information Session. A parent/guardian must contact a member of the Pastoral Team to do so before Friday, January 10 th, 2023. The Parish phone number is 905-358-7611.

The Sacrament of First Confession will be celebrated at Our Lady of Scapular Church.

• Monday, February 27 at 6:30 PM

• Tuesday, February 28 at 6:30 PM

• Wednesday, March 1 at 6:30 PM

• Sunday, May 14

Parents will choose which dates their sons or daughters will celebrate these two sacraments by making a reservation at the following link:

** The maximum number of families at each Mass for First Communicants is 15.

(Please note, this link is for reserving your spot at one of the First Communion Masses

and not the initial registration form.)

Students are encouraged to make their First Communion with their families on Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023.

*Students are required to celebrate First Confession before First Communion.

Parental involvement with your son/daughter’s sacramental preparation is crucial. Such involvement includes taking them to Mass each Sunday, living according to Church teachings, and talking with them about God. Our Lady of the Scapular Parish will soon be offering Children’s Liturgy at Sunday Mass to assist you. Nothing a teacher or parish priest can do will have a stronger influence on the development of a child’s faith than parental involvement. The primary educators of children are their parents.

Those receiving the Sacrament of First Confession/Communion must be a baptized Roman Catholic. For this reason, the parish must receive a copy of your son or daughter’s baptismal certificate with their First Communion Registration Form before Friday, January 13, 2023. If your child was not baptized or the Baptism occurred in another Christian denomination, select option 2 on the Registration Form. A Pastoral Team member will reach out to all students who need to be baptized or received into the Church before making their First Confession.

Candidates seeking First Confession/Communion will be instructed by their Grade Two teacher and the Parish Pastoral Team.

Two series of Instructional Sessions will be held on:

** Attendance at one session of each set by the child and one parent/guardian is required.

The sessions will last about an hour. Under exceptional circumstances, a session may be offered to children and parents unable to attend a scheduled one. A First Communion Rehearsal will be held at Our Lady of Scapular Parish.

For the First Confession Liturgy, candidates will be seated with their parents in the front pews. Following a short Liturgy of the Word, Sermon, General Intercessions and Examination of Conscience, they will celebrate individual Confession with a Priest in the Church’s Sanctuary and after offering their Penance are free to leave the Church with their parents/guardians.

During the Mass for First Communicants, the candidates will be seated with their families along the center aisle of the Church. Photography is not permitted at any time during the First Communion Mass since this is a sacred event. Following the Mass, photographs may be taken in the Church sanctuary with family members. Videos may only be taken from the pews and without the use of lights. Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated.

If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me at the parish office or telephone me at 905-358-7611. We thank you for your cooperation
